ANGELS IN AMERICA - HYMENOPTERA/STENCH OF A WOMAN

ANGELS IN AMERICA are Esra Padgett and Mark Iosifescu. They formed in 2007 in Montreal and have been a presence in a particularly unlit corner of the sub-underground ever since — moving through stints in Baltimore and Providence before settling back in their native New York City, dropping numerous cassette releases under different permutations (Miami Angels in America, Angels USA) and solo guises (Chicklette, Farewell My Concubine) across a spectrum of DIY labels (Ecstatic Peace, Digitalis, Night People, Northern Spy). Through all the contortions, some things have remained: an obstinate tendency to ride the line between traditional songforms and freeform noise, and the use of guitar, synths and vocals in the service of staking out an uncanny space somewhere in between.

With “Hymenoptera” “Stench Of A Woman” AiA circle back and forth between poles of their song/noise equation, weaving alternately mournful/anxious vocals with programmed beats, majestic guitar swells, and sweeping string orchestrations of both real and imagined varieties into a singularly haunting nether region between classic songcraft, creeping synth-dirge, and impressionistic, filmic reverie.
